Mauritius Museum
The modern museum, which is dedicated to the history and art of the island, was opened in November 2001. Since then it attracts a lot of visitors. The Museum collections also includes old marine maps, paintings, sculptures, stamps, engravings and old documents, which tell about Mauritian history and culture.
The collection is attractively presented through modern staging techniques, sounds and light special effects and multimedia screens. Information boards in English and French give explanations about the exhibition pieces. Audio guides are available in the following languages: English, French, German, Italian and Kreol. For groups a guided tour through the museum can be organized.
Mauritius Parks and Gardens
The park is set up with a variety of beautiful exotic plants and flowers. Moreover on the grounds of the park are located the delicious restaurant Le Mirador and a beautiful lookout point with stunning views over the west coast.
Mauritius Beaches
The endless white sandy beaches, the turquoise blue lagoons and the clean nice warm seawater all these are things for which Mauritius is so famous. There is an offshore riff almost around the whole island, riff which is the main factor in the genesis of this paradise with beaches and lagoons. The coastline of Mauritius is approximately 330 km long and nearly everywhere you can find the nice sandy beaches.
Mauritius Shopping
Mauritius has abolished taxes on most shopping items, meaning that its a great place to come to buy luxury goods, such as designer clothing, jewellery, perfume and electrical goods. Tourist shopping centres are located around the island, with a good selection of designer shops at the Caudan Waterfront complex in Port Louis, as well as in the smart resort town of Grand Baie. For real bargain hunters, join the locals at the textile markets and clothing factory outlet stores of Curepipe, Quatre-Bornes and Rose-Hill. In terms of traditional handicrafts, Mauritius offers little of huge interest, with the possible exception of locally produced baskets, tea, spices and fabrics. Another popular souvenir are model ships, for which Mauritius is famous.
Mauritius Food
Standards of cuisine, whether French, Creole, Indian, Chinese or English, are generally very high, but fruit, meat, vegetables and even fresh seafood are often imported.
